About the Shar-Pei
The Shar-Pei originated in southern China, where its bristly coat, deeply wrinkled skin, and distinctive blue-black tongue made it valued historically as a hunter, herder, and guardian. Statues resembling the breed have been dated to the Han Dynasty around 200 BCE, though verified breed history is harder to trace than that suggests. Modern Shar-Peis are known for a loyal, independent temperament and for skin folds that require genuinely regular care to stay healthy.
