About the Gerbil
The pet gerbil kept in homes today is almost always the Mongolian Gerbil, a small desert rodent native to the arid grasslands of Mongolia and northern China. Unlike the strictly nocturnal hamster, gerbils are diurnal — active during the day as well as at night — and their natural burrowing instinct, docile temperament, and low tendency to bite have made them a longstanding favorite among small-pet owners, particularly in households wanting a pet awake at more convenient hours than a hamster.
