Short answer: for most senior pets in India, the real question isn’t whether insurance is worth it — it’s whether you can still buy it. Of the Indian policies we checked in September 2026, Bajaj General takes new dogs only up to 7 years (4 for giant breeds), and HDFC ERGO’s Paws n Claws only up to 5 years. Both exclude pre-existing conditions. If your pet is already insured, keeping the policy renewed is usually worth it; if not, a dedicated savings fund is often the more practical plan.
Pet insurance in India is built very differently from US cover — especially around age. Here’s what the policies actually say.
How Does Pet Insurance Work in India Right Now?
Several general insurers regulated by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) now sell dog and cat policies. Two large examples, from their own websites:
- Bajaj General offers dog and cat cover built from separate sections: surgery and fracture, hospitalisation, a lump sum for listed terminal diseases (including cancer and chronic kidney failure), long-term care, OPD cover up to ₹30,000, mortality benefit, theft or loss, and third-party liability. Many sections “pay an agreed amount” rather than a percentage of the bill. It advertises plans from ₹169 a year — for ₹10,000 of surgery cover on a 1-year-old small dog. No medical check-up is required before buying.
- HDFC ERGO Paws n Claws covers cats and dogs for illness, injury, surgery, diagnostics, medication and OPD, with an optional third-party liability plan. It advertises cover “at just Rs 200/year” and lets individual owners insure up to five pets.
Premiums depend on the pet’s age, breed and the sum insured you choose. Bajaj General gives the example that ₹1 lakh of cover costs more than ₹30,000.

What Changes Once a Pet Is Considered Senior?
Mostly, the door closes to new policies. Here are the age rules from the two insurers’ own pages:
| Insurer | Who can join | How long cover can continue |
|---|---|---|
| Bajaj General — dogs (small, medium, large) | 3 months to 7 years | Up to 10 years, if renewed continuously |
| Bajaj General — giant-breed dogs | 3 months to 4 years | Up to 6 years, if renewed continuously |
| Bajaj General — cats | 3 months to 7 years | Up to 12 years |
| HDFC ERGO Paws n Claws | 6 months to 5 years | Check the policy wording |
Checked on the insurers’ websites in September 2026. Bajaj General’s main pet insurance page gives the limits above, but one section of its dog insurance page lists lower entry ages (up to 2 years, or 1 year for giant breeds) — so confirm the current limit with the insurer before you apply. Products change.
A few other things follow from this:
- A dog that turns senior while insured can usually stay covered for a few more years — but not for life. At Bajaj General, cover for most dogs ends at 10, and at 6 for giant breeds. Giant breeds reach their senior years earliest, so they’re the hardest to insure: see when a dog becomes a senior by size.
- Pre-existing conditions are excluded. Bajaj General says any condition that existed before the policy started isn’t covered; HDFC ERGO excludes pre-existing diseases and their complications.
- Other exclusions matter for older pets. Bajaj General’s list includes glaucoma, cosmetic procedures and routine check-ups or vaccinations outside the policy scope.
How Does This Compare to the US Market?
The gap is large, both in price and in age rules:
| India (examples above) | US | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price | From about ₹169–200 a year for basic cover | Average $836/yr for dogs, $435/yr for cats (accident & illness, 2025) |
| Latest age for a new policy | 4–7 years | Trupanion: under 14; Nationwide Modular illness cover: 8 and under |
| How claims pay | Often agreed amounts per benefit section | Usually a percentage (e.g., 70–90%) of the eligible bill |
| Pre-existing conditions | Excluded | Excluded |
US figures: NAPHIA State of the Industry 2026; Trupanion; Nationwide.
Those low premiums buy low caps: ₹10,000–₹1 lakh sums insured are a very different product from a US policy with a $10,000 or higher annual limit. For a wider cost comparison, see the real cost of owning a dog or cat in the US vs. India.
For NRI families managing pets in both countries, treat the two markets separately. Check the geographic scope in each policy’s wording rather than assuming it follows the pet. Lemonade, for example, says it doesn’t cover treatment outside the US. If you’re relocating, moving to the US with a senior pet from India covers the practical steps.

When Is Insurance Worth It for an Older Pet in India?
- Your pet is already insured. Keep renewing without a break. Bajaj General’s longer cover depends on continuous renewal, and a new policy would exclude anything already diagnosed.
- Your pet is approaching the entry cut-off and healthy. A dog of 5 or 6 (or a giant breed under 4) can still join Bajaj General, and a few years of cover for accidents, surgery and listed serious illnesses can be worthwhile.
- You want specific protections such as third-party liability or theft and loss cover, which a savings fund doesn’t replace.
When Does It Make Sense to Self-Insure?
- Your pet is past the entry age — often the case for seniors.
- Your pet already has a diagnosed condition that would be excluded as pre-existing.
- The available sum insured is small relative to realistic treatment costs in your city. Chronic conditions like kidney disease are ongoing bills, not one-off ones — see what treating kidney disease in cats costs.
- You can set aside a fixed amount every month in a separate pet emergency fund.
Whichever route you take, ask your vet for a realistic estimate of what your pet is likely to need at its age and breed.
